Again, thanks to everyone for posting so many kind and happy-making sentiments

About Packing for Mars:
Packing for Mars book coverSpace is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. Space exploration is in some ways an exploration of what it means to be human. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? have sex? smell flowers? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 17,000 miles per hour? To answer these questions, space agencies set up all manner of quizzical and startlingly bizarre space simulations. As Mary Roach discovers, it’s possible to preview space without ever leaving Earth. From the space shuttle training toilet to a crash test of NASA’s new space capsule (cadaver filling in for astronaut), Roach takes us on a surreally entertaining trip into the science of life in space and space on Earth. post Video!

July 27th, 2010

Here is a video that captures the essence of Packing for Mars. My wonderful publisher, W.W. Norton, had it made. It made me laugh out loud, something my own books only rarely do. Feel free to post, forward, blog about, tweet about, or ignore. Thanks, guys.

post Awesomeness galore

July 20th, 2010

I am booked on The Daily Show August 2!

I will also be on NPR’s Talk of the Nation earlier that day.

In other awesome turns, Packing for Mars has been picked as one of Amazon.com’s Best Books of August, and LibraryJournal.com’s “Books for Dudes” columnist says, “This completely awesome book’s awesomeness is so awesomely awesome that it’s difficult to get across just how awesome it is.”

post First review!

June 16th, 2010

Here’s the first official review of Packing for Mars. It’s from Kirkus, a trade pub. When I heard that Stiff got a starred Kirkus review, back in 2003, I thought my editor was saying “Carcass Review.” Which seemed to make sense.

Here’s a snippet: “Popular science writer Roach entertainingly addresses… life in outer space. There is much good fun with – and a respectful amount of awe at – the often crazy ingenuity brought to the mundane matters of surviving in a place not meant for humans. ….   A delightful, illuminating grab bag of spaceflight curiosities.” (starred review)

post Packing For Mars Book Tour

May 25th, 2010

Mark your calendars, gang, I’ve got the final schedule for the Packing for Mars book tour in August. Stop by and say hi. I promise you fun and raucousness and special giveaways. I’m looking forward to hitting the road and meeting everyone. Seriously. Last night I watched a one-hour biography of David Cassidy. I REALLY need to get out of the house more. (Susan Dey loved him, but he did not love her back.)
